The gas spring is filled with nitrogen or oil and gas mixture in a closed tube so that the pressure inside is dozens of times higher than the atmospheric pressure, and the movement of the piston rod is realized by using the generated pressure difference.
How does it work?
Gas spring is mainly composed of piston rod, tube, high pressure nitrogen, hydraulic oil (rigid lockable gas spring), piston, sealing and valve.
Push the rod end make the piston unit into the tube,
which compresses the gas. Stop pressing and release,
the pressure of the gas pushes the piston out again.
When the gas spring is fully pushed in, it has compressed the gas inside by an amount equal to the volume of the piston rod, and the gas is greatly compressed.
Gas pressures can be very high, can up to 170 times normal atmospheric pressure, so that when stop pressing, this pressure will push the piston out.
Next, we will show a actual application to better understand the work principle of the gas spring.
For example, the passenger information display in the subway, which have a gas spring inside.
When this display panel is opened, we can press the panel to make it close. (In this process, we also push the rod end of the gas spring to make the piston unit into the tube, the gas is compressed.)
Stop pressing and release the panel, it will open automatically.
(The pressure of the gas pushes the piston out.)
Gas spring’s function
1. Normal compression gas spring: the most common used to support heavy objects. (Like car bonnet, bus trunk)
2.Gas spring with buffer: there is a requirement for the specified extension speed of the gas spring, which requires its slow movement or only has a buffering effect at the end.
3.Quick extension gas spring: for some applications, a gas spring is required for fast, non-resistance extension.
4.Variable damping gas spring: the extension speed of the gas spring is different. And it has no installation angle requirement.
5.Locking gas spring: Gas spring can be locked at one certain length of the stroke. (Like medical bed)
Gas spring application
In our daily life, we can see there is many gas spring application, like the railway seat, truck door, tool box, lifting table, roof window, medical bed, wheelchair, bed mechanism, and etc.
