Different types of gas springs

There are many types of gas springs, including compression gas spring, locking gas spring, stainless steel gas spring, tension/traction gas spring, force adjustable gas spring, dampers, safety shroud gas spring, etc.

They are used in various industries and applications, provide safety support for lifting, lowering, positioning, and counterbalancing.

Although gas springs come in wide varieties, the overall structure is similar, consisting of a cylinder(filled with pressurized nitrogen), rod, piston, and end fitting, with differences in interior design, material selection, appearance, etc.

Compression Gas Spring

The standard compression gas spring is the most popular gas spring with fixed force. The cylinder is filled with pressurized nitrogen, which generates extended forces. It is self-contained, Maintenance-free, and has superior reliability. Widely used in various industries to support lifting, counterbalancing, and damping of applications.

Below are some applications JP has rich experiences by working with worldwide customers.

Here is a brief introduction of each gas spring, for more detail, please refer to our blog: Different types of gas springs

Locking Gas Spring

The lockable gas spring differs from the compressed gas spring in that it can be locked at any position along the stroke, with a pin at the rod end. When the pin is pressed, it acts like a compressed gas spring; And when the pin is released, it locked on the stroke.

Locking gas spring can be flexible or rigid; for the flexible type the rod may slightly “flex” when given a heavy compression load. One example is the seat height adjuster(equipped with a flexible gas spring), where the flexing provides users a comfortable “bouncy” feel. These springs must be installed in a rod-down orientation to ensure the piston unit is dipped in the oil.

For rigid type, no flex when the rod is being pressed. Examples are the operating tables or wheelchair recline mechanism; in these applications, no movement is tolerated in its locked position. These springs also must be installed in a rod-down direction.

In a word, flexible gas springs have “good” rigidity in compression, while rigid types have full rigidity.

Stainless Steel Gas Spring

316L Stainless Steel gas spring has the highest grade anti-corrosion characteristic, ideal to use in harsh environment applications such as marine, chemical, medical, and food industries.

Compression, locking, and tension gas springs can be made of 316L stainless steel if required.

Tension/Traction Gas Spring

Also called pulling gas spring, which operates in the direction opposite of compression gas spring. Some applications have limited space to mount a traditional compression gas spring, so tension type is a good alternative.

Some application examples:

Force adjustable Gas Spring

“Force Adjustable” means that the volume and pressure of the gas in the gas strut can be reduced via a valve to achieve the exact force suitable for your application.

It is always charged to the maximum force, then lowered to the desired force by users. This type of gas spring is very convenient and costsaving during prototype developments where the exact force is unknown, rather than trying various samples with different forces.

By far, there is no feasible way to increase the force on a gas strut.

This type of gas spring can also be made into compression type, tension type, or 316L stainless steel.

Dampers

Gas damper is a motion control component with hydraulic oil inside; it can provide a damping effect in compression or extension directions or both. This type of gas spring is popularly used in lids, doors, covers, or any other object needed to move at a desired or controlled speed when given an external force.

Some applications of gas dampers are:

Safety Locking Shroud Gas Spring

This type of gas spring has an additional safety locking shroud fitted on the rod side. The shroud can prevent the spring from compressing when the gas spring is fully extended. This mechanism can avoid potential injury when overload, misuse, or failure of the gas spring occurs.

It is ideal for the applications where the added safety feature is required, such as:
