If mounting allows, always have the piston rod downwards so that the sealing material and piston unit can keep lubricated with oil and less gas leakage over time. This way, the friction force will be less and reduce the wear. Also, your gas spring can move a little bit more smoothly.

A gas spring will work longer if there is no vibration on its application device or no lateral force applied to it.
