What does gas spring do

Gas springs, also called gas struts, gas lifts, gas support, etc. It is used in various industries and applications and provides:

  • Safety support forlifting (car hood).
  • Lowering (overhead bins).
  • Positioning (height adjustable table).
  • Counterbalancing.
  • Damping (gate or door panel).

Gas spring for lifting

It is the most common function of gas springs, which can help to lift heavy objects smoothly and effortlessly. Many people use the gas spring to lift the door or for other applications. Most think the gas spring is helping hold, not realizing the actual function is help raising. If the gas spring is broken, it will feel remarkably heavy when lifting, even cannot lift it.

Normally, compression gas spring is used for lifting.

For example:

Now many car tailgates and car hoods have gas spring to help lift.

Some other lifting applications are kitchen cabinet, hatch door, monitor brackets, etc.

Gas spring for lowering

When you release the lid without a mechanism from high to low, obviously, it’ll crash straight back down. But with a couple of gas springs on either side of the lid, it works differently. The gas spring will keep compress status when the lid is closed. If you want to release the lid, under the gravity and the lid weight, the gas spring will extend smoothly, which can help lower the lid without free-falling.

For example, overhead bins in airplanes can be smoothly lowered with the help of gas springs.

Some other lowering applications are adjustable sofa, passenger seat, fireproof door, etc.

Gas spring for positioning

Sometimes, we would like the lid/ cover to stop at a certain position instead of the end or the top. The lockable gas spring can be locked at any position along the stroke, with a pin at the rod end. When the pin is pressed, it acts like a compressed gas spring; and when the pin is released, it is locked on the stroke.

For example, height adjustable table can be locked in any position under the action of the lockable gas spring.

Some other positioning applications are monitor arm, lifting table, medical bed, etc

Gas spring for damping

In some applications, if the extended speed of the gas spring is too rapid, which would result in the product damage, injury, and so on. So that the damping gas spring is vital for these applications. Because there is an oil damping zone inside, when the gas spring extends, the oil acts to slow the speed and prevent shock loads.

For example, the damping gas spring on the access gate door can help control the opening speed even under strong winds.

Some other damping applications are Casino gaming machine, electronic panels, etc.
